The horizon was just beginning to swallow the sun by the time Dorothy perched up on the balcony railing outside. Downstairs the party goers could be heard still playing the piano where Norman had it moved for the party. The current pianist at least showcasing some skill with a more romantic piece by Chopin. Moody passion of the song resonating with her somewhere deep in her core.

She was Roger’s plus one tonight (despite what a woman downstairs monopolizing all his attention would have everyone believe). The corsage she wore that matched his boutonnière is proof of this. Dark red, with edges of the petals painted gold. The matching set went well with their black and gold apparel of the night. A choice Roger insisted upon in keeping with his black palette, bending only to Dorothy’s idea for the gold trim.

“There you are! I’ve just barely escaped Silvia’s clutches,” comes Roger’s voice from the door. Some of his hair fallen loose from the slicked back style he started the evening with. “Secreting away, huh? Some date you are.” He smiles playfully. A joke.

“I grew tired of all the poor piano playing.” Dorothy says, plain and blunt.

“Come down and play,” Roger says with a note of defeat. “I don’t think I can take Bruno trying to play Mephisto Waltz again.”

Dorothy settles back down on the ground, dusting off the skirt of her dress. “But if I play who will keep Silvia’s hands off you?” Dorothy asks, punctuating it with a pointed look up at him.

“What do you say we try to duo Debussy again?”

A decent idea. Dorothy nods and Roger takes a calming breath and leads the way back down to the party.

She decides halfway through Diane: Ouverture that she will keep the corsage once the party is over.
