The stars were always lovely from this spot at this time of night.
Hasegawa snuffed out his cigarette on a rock beside the bench he sat on. A street lamp in the distance blinked off and on in a rhythmic pattern, as if to snatch some twinkle for itself. The night air was just beginning to cool and brought with it a slight breeze that coaxed his eyes closed briefly as he gazed up at the starry night above.
He used to travel out there among those distant celestial bodies. How brilliant they are. All that radiated gas bursting with promise and potential for more, for greatness. Hasegawa wished he could grasp any of that radiance for himself, but alas, that chance has likely long passed him by. The only gas he ever produces bursts from his ass.
Hasegawa chuckled to himself and dug inside his suit pocket for his other pack. Keen for another smoke while he stargazes.
Only, his pack isn’t there.
Alarmed, he groped the other pocket; nothing. He dropped his head, hands rustling his hair in an attempt to physically wrack his brain for answers. Then he remembered: the second pack was back at home in the bag of groceries. He left without it. He puckered out his bottom lip at the realization and looked back up at the stars like they’d done this to him.
A scuff of ground came on his left and when he turned toward the sound he caught sight of a tall figure walking toward him, the silhouette a familiar shape. Thanks to the light from the vending machine behind him, the person was illuminated: Gintoki.
Speaking of radiance.
The young swordsman plopped down next to him, opened a can of beer and passed it over without saying a single word.
